Ficus Whitefly
In late September 2007, many ficus trees & shrubs suddenly began to defoliate. This damage is a result of a newly introduced species of Whitefly usually found in India, China and Burma, where it’s considered a major pest. According to Miami Dade / UF extension service horticulturist and entomologist Adrian Hunsberger, this pest has not been reported in the Caribbean and likely arrived by ship in the Miami River Area. So far, this pest has only been found on three species of ficus: the weeping fig, the lofty fig and the banyan. Further native figs or other plants could also be affected in the future.
